New Viagra side effect?

Q:I heard that sex medications may cause deafness. I already have some hearing problems and I don't want to make things worse. My wife and I would be disappointed if I have to stop my medicine. What is your advice?

A: There have been recent reports of 29 men experiencing hearing problems after taking Viagra, Levitra or Cialis. The FDA has asked the pharmaceutical companies to be sure that patients and physicians are aware of these new findings.

Since 1998, at least 60 million doses of Viagra, Levitra or Cialis have been ingested worldwide. In 1999, there was concern that Viagra may cause heart problems. Extensive medical data show no increased heart problems in men taking these medications, as long as they do not already have angina or any severe heart problems. Three years ago, there was concern the medications may cause blindness. Multiple studies have shown this not true.

I recommend to my patients that if they have concerns with their heart, eyesight or hearing in any way related to these medications, they should stop them immediately and be evaluated by their physicians. In the absence of problems or side effects, I think you can use these medicines as they were meant to be used -- to increase your ability to have satisfactory sexual relations to improve the intimacy between you and your wife.
